From Warsaw: COP19 UN Climate Change Conference 2013
COP19 (14/11/2013) – Denise Matrias, Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, talks about her work with Germanwatch on a low carbon project in an island in the Philippines where there are a lot of indigenous people and biodiversity.
She says that the area’s energy systems should be decentralised in order to address the terrain and the indigenous people who live there and are dependent on diesel power plants.
Matrias says that the area should switch to renewable energy so that the local people will not be dependent on fluctuating diesel prices but on clean and reliable energy sources instead.
In the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan, she says that although mitigation to climate change is needed, so is adaptation as well.
