COP18: Australia puts Kyoto Protocol II target on the table

From Qatar: COP18 UN Climate Change Conference 2012
COP18 (26/11/12) – Will McGoldrick, Policy Manager on Climate Change at WWF-Australia talks to the Climate Change Studio about the Australian government’s target for the second commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol. He says that for WWF the target of a 5% cut by 2020, on 1990 levels, is not enough but that the willingness of the government to up this to 25% is an important signal.
He talks about the position Australia is in when it comes to domestic politics and explains that while there is bi-partisan support for the Kyoto Protocol and the commitments set out in Doha, the two main parties in Australia still disagree on the best way to cut emissions domestically.
McGoldrick says the government must now work out how to increase their reduction target towards 25% and says cutting emissions from coal mining will be a particular challenge for the country.
